Volvo adopts Tesla EV charging standard

Volvo Cars has officially become Europe’s first automaker to switch its electric vehicles to the charger standard developed by Tesla Inc. The company has already confirmed the intention to the media and revealed an agreement it signed with the U.S. carmaker. That said, Volvo owners will retain access to the Combined Charging System (CCS) as well.

The transition to the power transmission protocol known as NACS (North American Charging Standard) will begin in the first half of 2024 and follow the same basic route as with the other automakers. All Volvo EVs will get an adapter that will let them plug into Tesla Supercharger terminals. Doing so will let owners enjoy over 12,000 additional charging sports across over 2,000 locations in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Volvo mobile app will help locate the nearest terminal when needed.

Starting in 2025, the Swedish company plans to produce EVs exclusively with the Tesla-standard charging port. The automaker’s CCS chargers will continue to be supported via a free adapter provided by the company to those needing it.
