Volvo has announced a software solution developed by UK-based startup Breathe Battery Technologies that should accelerate electric car charging without any need for hardware modifications.
There are no technical specifics at the moment, but the company says Breathe Battery has managed to create a truly “adaptive” charging routine. A special piece of software uses a dynamic algorithm to detect the optimal charging current at any moment and bumps it up when it sees that the battery can take more.
As a result, the standard 10-to-80 percent charge should be completed 15–30 percent faster than before. The company also points out that the new technology will be applicable to all batteries throughout their entire life cycle, even those with partially degraded capacity.
It remains to be seen when the technology becomes mass-market and what Volvo EVs will take advantage of it first.
