Video: Elderly, tuned Volvo Amazon vs. Volkswagen Golf R

The Hoonigan team has posted a new video on YouTube featuring an eighth-gen Volkswagen Golf R hatchback in a drag race against a 52-year-old Volvo Amazon. The latter was tuned to the hilt, but you wouldn’t know it from the outcome of the race.

Powered by a two-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 315 PS (311 hp / 232 kW), the German hatchback is completely stock. Its seven-speed transmission benefits from pre-selection and drives both axles. The car weighs in at 1,542 kilos (3,400 pounds).

The Volvo Amazon retains its stock body, but is otherwise pretty much a new car. It gets its forward momentum from a 5.7-liter LS1 V8 rated at 420 PS (414 hp / 309 kW). A four-speed transmission drives the rear wheels. Aside from being more powerful, the car is much lighter at just 1,134 kg (2,500 pounds).

Watch the video for a few unexpected outcomes or read on for spoilers.

Both standing starts began with the Golf R snapping off the line and leading for about a half of the distance, after which the Volvo barely managed to overtake it and inch out the victory – by a half body at most. In the third run, the German hot hatch had a bit of a headstart and proceeded to win easily.
