When the all-electric Volvo C40 Recharge debuted worldwide in March 2020, it had multiple features that immediately drew attention to themselves. For one, it was exclusively sold online. Now, it turns out there is no leather inside – and none will ever be.
Volvo has just made it official that all its future EVs will make do without natural leather, a move dictated by animal protection ethics. By 2030, not a single Volvo car, whether ICE or electric, will have leather in the cabin.
The automaker intends to substitute animal skins with quality artificial materials derived from plants or recycled from waste. One of the examples would be Nordico, a new interior trim fabric designed by Volvo from recycled plastic bottles and wine corks.
