According to Volvo’s financial report for Q1 2023, the company had to take a break in taking new reservations for its all-electric SUV, the EX90. The reason is that the demand for the car unexpectedly exceeded the industrial capacities.
The Swedish automaker claims that the entire first production batch was swept off the metaphorical shelves. The production in Charlestown, USA and Chengdu, China will not begin until the fourth quarter of the year. The company says it plans to re-open the pre-orders soon, but avoids mentioning when.
The Volvo EX90, the marque’s battery-powered flagship SUV, debuted in November 2022. It is over 5 meters (16.4 feet) long with around 3 meters (9.8 feet) of wheelbase. It is set to ship with two drivetrain options – 408 PS (402 hp / 300 kW) and 517 PS (510 hp / 380 kW).
During the premiere, the starting price of the EV was set to €105,550. More affordable options are also underway to the market, but the is no information about them right now. Finally, Volvo plans to keep the ICE counterpart of the EX90 – the XC90 – on the lineup for the near future.
The same report also says that Volvo will introduce its cheapest EV so far in a few months, a model designed to attract a wider target audience. It will have the body of a compact crossover SUV and will be called EX30.
