Volvo Cars has issued an official statement saying it would eventually cease to produce diesel vehicles and engines. The upcoming Volvo S60 sedan will be the first to drop diesel support.
Many car manufacturers in Europe, Sweden-based Volvo among them, are actively revising their engine palettes to make their cars as environmentally clean as possible. In the long term, this also means a permanent switch from internal combustion engines to all-electric drivetrains.
Diesel engines aren’t very popular on the market in general, and the increasingly strict environmental laws make them even less appealing.
The Volvo model lineup for 2019 will only include hybrid and mild-hybrid vehicles alongside their all-electric counterparts.
Remarkably enough, it was Volvo that actively marketed diesel-driven cars just a few years ago when they were still on the peak of popularity. Nowadays, they are cheaper than their gas-powered siblings.
