Check out a Volvo V70 made from Lego parts

David Gustafsson, from Sweden, has spent more than a year building a copy of his trusty Volvo V70 out of Lego pieces. When the sculpture is finished (it still isn’t), he reckons he will have used between 350,000 and 400,000 elements, Motor1 reports.

As you may have guessed by now, Gustafsson is a devoted fan of the Lego brand. Several years ago, he won the grand prize of the Lego Masters competition – 400,000 randomly picked Lego pieces. After a while, he figured out how he wanted to use them.

The sculpture seen here isn’t composed entirely out of plastic parts – among other things, it takes advantage of an actual stainless-steel frame for stiffness and rests on real car wheels and tires. Perhaps most impressively, it can be driven thanks to a small-time electric motor on board.

The rest is made out of Lego bricks with painstaking attention to detail. The doors swing open as you’d expect, and you can get inside the cabin. The steering wheel, the transmission lever and the HVAC knobs move as they are supposed to. Everything down to the individual gauges has been faithfully reproduced. If that’s not impressive enough for you, consider that the car has functional power windows and active headlights that swivel around along with the steering wheel.

The mock V70 is currently attending a series of shows and public events in Sweden. Gustaffson says the build has taken over 350,000 Lego pieces so far, but still needs some finishing touches. He doesn’t know when it might be complete.
