Volvo & Polestar working on compact, affordable battery CUVs

Swedish automaker Volvo and its all-electric subdivision Polestar will spend the next few years designing a couple of smaller, cheaper crossover SUVs running on electric power, Autocar reports.

The wallet-friendly EVs should help the company reach its strategic goal, raising electric car sales to 50% or more in its sales structure by 2025. Despite costing less than any other Volvo or Polestar EV, these new cars will still belong to the premium segment and compete with the likes of the DS3 Crossback e-Tense or Mercedes-Benz EQA.

Rumors had circulated that the next Volvo car might be called ‘C20’ or ‘XC20’, but the company has since revised its naming conventions. Among other things, it is now official that the next-gen XC90 will be given a different name. With this in mind, speculating about names seems pointless right now.

Platform-wise, the affordable Volvo EV will purportedly be based on the same platform as the Geely Zeekr 001. Geely is the master brand of Volvo, so this would be the most logical turn of events. The platform in question supports air-ride suspension adjustments in the 70mm (2.73”) range, face recognition, and 700 km (435 miles) of all-electric range.

The Polestar e-SUV will follow a couple of years later and slot in between the company’s 2 and 3 models. It will be based on the CMA chassis of the Volvo C40 Recharge featured in our gallery here. CEO Thomas Ingenlath said the next EV would combine sporty looks with a spacious interior.
