The Volvo XC40 advertised as one of world’s safest EVs

Volvo is preparing to launch the all-electric XC40 in the USA, and the first chassis renderings are already here. The company claims the SUV will offer class-leading levels of safety.

The model is going to be Volvo’s first mass-produced electric vehicle in history. The marque says the time has come to slowly phase out ICE-powered models in favor of electric power. As such, it expects its currently available gasoline and diesel engine range to be the last, with no further developments.

According to the manufacturer, the reinforced front end of the battery-powered CX40 will do much to improve its overall safety. The traction battery at the bottom will ensure low center of gravity and prevent tumbling. The battery itself comes encased in a protective cage made of extruded aluminum, and the rear end also sports various reinforcements aimed at protecting the engine and the people inside the car. Needless to say, the car will benefit from all kinds of electronic safety tech on top of that.

The official reveal date is October 16, 2019.
