Volvo admits to working on a small electric CUV

While premiering the Volvo C40 Recharge (see the gallery and video), CEO Håkan Samuelsson said the company was developing a compact-sized crossover SUV.

Volvo has mentioned this possibility before, but never promised anything – until now. With SUVs accountable for three quarters of its total sales, however, it comes as no surprise at all.

No specifics have been given regarding the powertrain. The car could arrive based on the SEA platform created by Geely specifically for electric vehicles. This would mark the first time Geely-owned Volvo would build a production car based on a platform originating from China. That said, Samuelsson did mention that he found the SEA platform rather suitable for a premium EV.

The company had earlier applied for XC10 and XC20 model names. Its roadmap until 2025 mentions five new EVs and a full electrification of the range by 2030.

In other news, Geely has recently acquired the Smart brand and started working on a small CUV for it, so the two models might end up related.
