Volvo and Polestar have co-developed an application named Range Assistant to maximize the driving range obtainable from their batteries. The Volvo XC40 Reacharge and Polestar 2 will be the first to receive it during the next software update planned for late October. The recently introduced Volvo C40 Recharge Coupe (see video) will have it pre-installed from the factory.
The app offers a wide spectrum of power-saving features and can automatically optimize the power consumption of the climate control system based on the remaining charge. It can also display helpful hints on ways to conserve power by driving carefully.
Furthermore, the technology envisions passive ways of extending range. For instance, whenever you choose a charging station as your destination on Google Maps, the application starts preparing the battery array for rapid charging, thus reducing the time spent at a charger. It also displays a detailed energy usage breakdown. Neither of the companies provides any specific percentages speaking of the savings, however.
Aside from the above, the update enhances safety features, adds warnings about the impact of cold weather on battery functionality and capacity, and fixes certain bugs left in the previous release.
The Range Assistant is a part of the Volvo Care Package, a package that comes standard with all Volvo vehicles and remains free for four years. Users whose grace period has run up can subscribe to it on a paid basis.
