Volvo ponders the viability of another large SUV

Automotive News cites sources close to Volvo claiming a new crossover SUV may slot in between the XC60 and XC90 in a few years. The Swedish automaker has not commented yet.

According to the publication, the company is preparing an industrial site in South Carolina, USA to begin producing the car provisionally known only as the V546 in 2025. It will allegedly be based on a new architecture that allows for traditional and electric powertrains. The design will reportedly follow the guidelines set by the Recharge Concept from the last year (see gallery). Earlier rumors said the concept previewed a Volvo XC90 successor named Embla.

In all likelihood, the new Volvo will be marketed as an electric car first and foremost. This would be in line with the manufacturer’s drive towards becoming all-electric by the end of the decade.

Volvo and Polestar announced the development of a few compact electric CUVs in December last year, promising to make them the cheapest EVs on their respective lineups. Both will primarily compete against the Mercedes-Benz EQA when they reach the market.
