As Volvo plans to replace its alphanumeric model names with more human-sounding ones, Australia-based The Drive Magazine supposes that a battery-powered XC90 might be called the Embla – after the mythical first woman created by the Scandinavian gods.
Speaking in an interview to Automotive News, CEO Hakan Samuelsson said the name of the XC90 successor would begin with a vowel. The Drive conducted some research and found that the company did, indeed, register a trademark beginning with a vowel over the past four years: Embla. No other fitting trademarks were discovered in the databases.
The company believes that the name of the Earth’s first woman taken from the Scandinavian legend would be a perfect fit for the luxury automaker’s first EV, which opens a new page in its history and has no direct peers on the lineup.
Design-wise, the car will probably be close to the Recharge Concept shown in our gallery here.
