Volvo getting 5 new EVs ready for the U.S. market

Volvo will be unveiling a new electric car in 2023 and previewing another four later, Automotive News reports referencing a recent conference the automaker held for its North American dealers. A couple of new plug-on hybrids is also down the line.

The company has yet to reveal any details about the car, but chances are good that it is a large SUV coming to replace the latest XC90 for good. An off-roader like this is already being co-developed with Polestar, and rumor has it that it may be called ‘Embla’. The EV may therefore be the first modern Volvo to make use of a human-sounding name, rather than an alphanumeric index.

Other new additions to the range should include a compact crossover SUV, a sedan and two sports wagons. Some of these may be based on Polestar chasses and technology. In particular, that marque is getting ready to debut the Polestar 5, a vehicle combining sedan and liftback traits in a body looking like the Precept design study shown earlier.

As for the PHEVs, these will represent modification of the S90 and XC90. Adding an electric motor to these models’ respective engines will enable both to cover a few dozen kilometers in all-electric mode.

In other recent news, bits of information leaked online about a new Volvo SUV that would slot in between the XC60 and XC90. This one may also get an electrified variant alongside the main ICE version.
