Volvo explains the tech behind its new flagship’s displays

Volvo has published a teaser video dedicated to the interior of the EX90, the successor to the XC90. The new car combines a laconic dashboard with a large central touchscreen and a rather small digital instrument cluster with an AI-powered data output.

The carmaker promises to implement the principle of clean data presentation free from any redundant information that might distract the driver. The infotainment system will automatically switch among various data presentations depending on the context – for instance, automatically open the infotainment interface when the car is moving evenly or offer HVAC controls when the interior gets too cold.

The dashboard will operate on the same principle, but the company has not revealed all the details yet. For now, we know that the electronic assist features on board will have a way of communicating with the driver, informing them about the cars nearby and other objects on the road, even when the car goes on autopilot. They will also provide useful insight into their working principles and limitations.

The panel shown in the video can automatically switch to a minimalist mode to keep the driver focused on the road. The Swedish automaker calls it ‘providing the right data at the right time and in the right place.’
