Alpina says it will launch the B3 estate/wagon first

The new Alpina B3, based on the BMW 3 Series, will make an appearance at the Frankfurt Motor Show starting in two weeks. However, contrary to our expectations, it will be an estate/wagon, rather than the sedan/saloon we have seen on spy shots and the video here.

The BMW M340i comes equipped with a three-liter turbo-six engine good for 374 hp (275 kW). We can expect Alpina’s version to add around 50 hp (37 kW) to that number, but hardly more – after all, the tuner seems wary of undercutting sales of the M3. The previous-gen B3 had 404 hp (301 kW) under the hood.

Exterior changes will likely boil down to a modest body kit, a quad-pipe exhaust system and Alpina’s signature multi-spoke wheels.

The new B3 will share the Frankfurt exhibition booth with other novelties, including the XD3 and XD4 SUVs, the new B5 Bi-Turbo estate/wagon, and a souped-up BMW X7.
