Watch a robot artist apply custom graphics to a car in 30 minutes

ABB Robotics has shot a video showcasing a technology named PixelPaint, using which the company transfers images onto car bodies in an automatic fashion. Turning a jalopy into a masterpiece takes less than half an hour on average.

The demo features artworks from two different artists. The first one, Illusorr, was created by a duo of web designers from Dubai, who drew inspiration from airflow around the car body. The other one, dubbed Zebra Utopia, was drawn by eight-year-old abstract artist Advait Kolarkar from India.

Transferring the work onto the car body took less than thirty minutes. The company7 behind the tech claims the two cars featured in the video are the world’s first vehicles with art applied to them by robots.

Aside from dedicated software, PixelPaint uses a special paint head assembled from a thousand of jet nozzles. Spraying the paint prevents any losses and eliminates the need for additional ventilation, because the space between the paint head and the bodywork does not exceed several millimeters. As a result, the painting process is both more affordable and less wasteful compared to the more traditional approaches.
