Great Wall Motors Company has shown quite a lot of interest towards retro-styled cars lately: first it unveiled a design study named the Futurist, then came the Ora Punk Cat (see video), and now, Wey joins in on the fad.
Wey is a Chinese car marque themed after the various sorts of coffee. Since the establishment of the Tank sub-brand, it has not produced a single true body-on-frame SUV, limiting itself to crossovers instead.
The new Wey Retro SUV sports LED lighting and dual tailpipes, and does not look inspired by any classic in particular. It is set to debut live at the Chengdu Auto Show under the internal name of V72.
The Wey Mocha is also known as ‘V71’, so perhaps the two cars will share equipment and tech. The Mocha draws its power from a 2.0-liter gasoline four-cylinder turbo rated at 215 PS (212 hp / 158 kW) and 388 Nm (286 lb-ft) of torque. A 48V starter-generator assists the main engine, and a nine-speed DCT sends the momentum to the wheels, accelerating the crossover from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.8 seconds.
Three years ago, Great Wall Motors hired Phil Simmons, ex-Exterior Designer of Land Rover, as its design director. Simmons had initially worked only on Haval vehicles, but now supervises the design across multiple brands.
