200km/5min: China unveils a rapid charge system for EVs

Chinese car manufacturer Xpeng has come up with a complete ecosystem concept for electric cars. The presentation covered multiple items, but the single biggest highlight was an X-Power charging terminal capable of pumping 480W into your EV to replenish 200 kilometers (124 miles) of range within mere five minutes.

The current used amounts to a scary 670 Amperes. A dedicated power storage system enables one X-Power station to charge multiple vehicles at once and process 30 vehicles in a row before it needs a pause. The equipment comes with safeguards installed and is dust- and moisture-protected to the extent the manufacturer claims is on par with IP67.

He Xiaopeng, founder and manager of the startup, believes that satisfying customer demand in quick charging solutions in a variety of situations is one of the primary engineering tasks for EV makers to solve in order to get a firm hold in the market.

Xpeng boasts China’s largest EV charging ecosystem consisting of 439 rapid-charge terminals and 1,648 standard ones. Over the next two years, Xpeng plans to satisfy 100% of the EV charging demand in larger cities, suburban areas, and on highways. According to the plan, all major highways will have at least one charging station at both ends and a few more next to major service and infrastructure objects.

On a related note, the company intends to use the power stations to charge its electric VTOL (shown in our gallery and in the video).
