During its 1024 Tech Day event, Chinese automaker Xpeng has introduced a new seven-seat minivan called the X9, which will run on electric power alone and be the first van on that country’s market to offer rear-wheel steering straight from factory. More details will be revealed at the Guangzhou Motor Show starting on November 1.
The X9 sports a rather futuristic appearance for a production vehicle, looking like a mix between a car and a spaceship. It also lacks a vertical tailgate in the back, resulting in an unusual, fastback-like silhouette. The sides sport creases, and the grille slab at the front is reversely inclined.
With 5,293 mm (206.8 in) of body length and 3,160 mm (123.4 in) of wheelbase, all seven passengers inside will enjoy ample legroom. A luxury six-seat version is expected to debut later on.
For the powertrain, the customers have two main options. There is a single-motor spec with a 320-PS (316-hp / 235-kW) motor on the front axle and a dual-motor one with 503 PS (496 hp / 370 kW) combined.
Batteries also come in two sizes – 84.5 and 101.5 kilowatt-hours. Those buying the single-motor version will be able to choose, while those opting for the flagship spec will have to pay for the larger pack. The ranges in different conditions are manufacturer-rated at 610, 640 ad 702 kilometers per charge (379, 397 and 436 miles).
