XPeng to introduce a B-class sedan running on BorgWarner motors

BorgWarner has officially confirmed that it would be mass-producing HVH220 eMotor units for the Chinese automaker Xpeng. These motors will be powering the company’s X9 minivan and a still-unannounced B-class sedan scheduled to reach production in Q3 2024.

We have already heard about a new XPeng sedan being in the works under an internal designation ‘F57’. The company’s current four-door car lineup consists of two models: P5 and P7. Both are running an older 400-volt power architecture and are selling rather poorly. In contrast, the company’s latest G6 and G9 SUVs running on an 800-volt platform get increasingly popular with the audience in China, as does the company’s latest X9 minivan.

The HVH220 motor uses a rotor and a stator designed by BorgWarner and benefits from a patented coil technology. It is designed to work with 800-volt EV platforms and can output up to 408 PS (402 hp / 300 kW). For comparison, the current base version of the XPeng X9 uses a single front-axle motor rated at 320 PS (316 hp / 235 kW). The flagship version gets a motor on every axle, but still doesn’t exceed 503 PS (496 hp / 370 kW). This makes us think that the new sedan may actually get to enjoy more thrust than the company’s other creations so far.

Media first learned about the XPeng F57 saloon last summer, when the automaker’s product plan for the next several years leaked online. It specified that the car would reach the market in a wide variety of trim versions with three battery choices rated at 550, 600 and 700 km (342, 373 and 435 miles) of range. The reporters in China concluded that it sounded like a car worth 200,000–300,000 Yuan (U.S. $28,000–42,000). XPeng has never commented on the leak.
