Xpeng’s first hybrid is a minivan with almost 1,000 miles of range

The Chinese automaker’s first part-electric vehicle is minivan-shaped and based on the X9 EV that celebrated its domestic debut in early 2024. With its battery and gas tank maxed, it will have impressive 1,602 km (995 miles) of range.

This is made possible thanks to a 60-liter gas tank and a 63.3-kWh battery pack – plug-in hybrids rarely ship with batteries as large as this. Back in August, the company said that its first PHEV model would be able to cover 450 km (280 miles) per charge in electric mode, and it seems realistic with so much energy storage on board.

Underpinning the minivan is a powertrain known as the Kungpeng Super Electric. It was announced last fall and developed by Xpeng in the house. Back then, the company reckoned it would be good for 430 km (267 miles) of all-electric range and 1,400 km (870 miles) combined.

Explaining its decision to diversify its portfolio, Xpeng – which had previously focused on EVs for the Chinese domestic market – says it has to respect the priorities of customers worldwide and the availability of charging infrastructure in their countries. Simply put, it sounds like the company wants to expand its business internationally and cannot do so with battery-electric cars alone.

Four more Xpeng hybrids are slated for debut in the near future.
