Tank 500 gets a 3.0L diesel version

Great Wall has announced an expansion of its powertrain lineup thanks to a high-end, high-torque 3.0-liter diesel. According to CarSales quoting preliminary data from the manufacturer, it will begin to be installed in SUVs and pickup trucks for China and Australia in mid-2026.

The off-roader known as the Tank 500 will allegedly be the first to receive this mill. Great Wall claims that the engine is being designed from scratch with superior power and torque curves, as well as lower emissions than the existing 2.0L and 2.4L designs. Interestingly enough, it’s being described as a four-cylinder block despite the considerable displacement.

The company provides no rationalization for this new engine, but CarSales unofficially reports that the GWM execs decided to introduce it after looking at the sales of the company’s existing SUVs and trucks equipped with the smaller diesels. Perhaps they weren’t as brisk as the automaker intended.

We are told that the same engine will find its way under the hood of some trucks, including the Shanhai Poer. Known in Australia as the Cannon Alpha, the truck is closely related to the Tank 500 in terms of underlying tech. For the premiere date, the sources tentatively say May 2026.

The facelifted Tank 500 went on sale in China this August, featuring an improved interior and mildly tuned engines. On its domestic market, the body-on-frame off-roader is obtainable with a non-electrified petrol engine and two hybrid powertrains to choose from.
