Mazda CX-50 bows in China with same looks, different strengths

Mazda has unveiled a localized variant of its CX-50 CUV in China. The model will be produced at a joint-stock enterprise which is also assembling Changan cars.

While looking similar to its U.S. counterpart, the China-spec CX-50 is not exactly identical to it. For one thing, it is 66 mm longer and between 15–25 mm taller, depending on the trim level. The wheelbase and width stay the same.

The interior is basically unchanged, too, but the engine lineup is all new. In China, the CX-50 comes powered by a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine rated at 158 PS (156 hp / 116 kW) and a larger 2.5-liter unit good for 195 PS (192 hp / 143 kW). All-wheel-drive is a paid option. The American lineup uses different engines and has AWD included in all specs.

The sales launch in China is scheduled for the first half of 2023. A hybrid spec will be introduced to the range later on.
