Video: Watch a Dodge Viper off-roader climb rocks and jump from ramps

YouTuber SuperfastMatt and Matt Brown, the creator of this wild Dodge Viper Safari build, have teamed up on an exciting video dedicated to this truly unique ride. You can see how well it fares in controlled slides, rock climbing and even air stunts.

Brown had mostly designed and built the car himself. Despite his extensive experience working for numerous automobile companies and racing teams, finishing the project took him a whole year.

Rather than simply merging the body of the American supercar with a body-on-frame chassis like many would do, he resolved to work with the OEM chassis and drivetrain. He did source some components from other brands – for example, the rear axle came from a Jeep Wrangler – but firmly decided not to implement AWD.

According to him, the car fared very well in the drift and donut-making disciplines, but struggled to ascend a steep hill. It didn’t help that it only had two driven wheels and a specific engine tune that made them skid all the time on the mixed sand/gravel road.

Long-travel shock absorbers ensured that the Viper had no issue whatsoever with fast driving on a rough dirt track and launching itself from ramps. After dozens of successful jumps, Brown decided to go for something different and try a sand race between his Viper, a Ford Ranger and a light aircraft. You’ll see it at the end of the video here.

Commenting on the project, Brown admitted that the project was still far from complete. The exhaust system needed an upgrade, an external roll cage was in order, and the steering mechanism needed a complete rework with stronger arms and a smaller turn radius in mind.
