Saleen-tuned Ford Mustang hits auction in Florida

While Saleen Automotive still delivers the occasional custom car nowadays, its true zenith of glory was in the 1980s, when it used to produce hundreds of such cars every year. The 1989 Ford Mustang depicted here came out in a batch of 734 units, and you can still grab this example on Bring-a-Trailer if you hurry.

Compared to the stock Mustang of that era, the Saleen version featured completely redesigned front and rear, longer side skirts and a large rear spoiler. It rode on 18-inch, five-spoke wheels shod in Landsail LS588 rubber.

The interior greeted the driver with comfortable new bucket seats and had a rear bench trimmed in grey fabric with red piping. Saleen put its logos all around the cabin and placed a serial number plaque next to the gear lever. The car on sale is number 668, by the way.

On the technical side of things, every Saleen Mustang from this production batch featured Racecraft suspension and upgraded brakes. The 5.0-liter non-turbo V8 under the hood was left alone, generating its usual 228 PS (225 hp / 168 kW) and 407 Nm (300 lb-ft) of torque. The transmission is five-speed manual, and the drive is on the rear axle.
