Mercedes-AMG recalls G 63 4x4^2 over suspension failure

278 owners of the latest Mercedes-AMG G 63 4x4 Squared will have to visit a service station, the manufacturer and the NHTSA warn. Under certain circumstances, individual suspension components of the SUV can break, potentially causing a serious accident.

Specifically, the affected cars have bad differential gear housing on their rear axle. In the best case scenario, the housing may simply crack and start leaking oil. A worse scenario involves the differential gear itself may break, causing an abrupt torque loss and putting the car occupants into danger.

Mercedes USA said it was treating the issue as very serious and called upon all owners of affected cars to stop driving them until a solution could be found. Wherever possible, the company will be reimbursing all tow truck expenses to have the car carried to the dealership, examined and repaired if necessary.

No incidents or injury have been linked to the issue so far, but the company admitted having received multiple rear axle failure reports both in the USA and overseas. The true reason behind the defect remains unknown even following an internal investigation conducted by the automaker.
