Polestar claims a breakthrough in EV charging

Polestar has posted a video report featuring a Polestar 5 prototype running on power cells by Israeli vendor StoreDot. The company claims that the car was able to charge from 10 to 80 percent in under 10 minutes, setting an absolute record. StoreDot adds that the technology should be ready for the mass market very soon.

It is Extreme Fast Charging (XFC) and lets the car’s impressively sized 77-kWh battery pack receive enough juice for 322 km (200 miles) of range in 10 minutes or less. The company hopes to continue improving it targeting 160 km (100 miles) per 3 minutes of charging by the year 2028. Interested buyers probably won’t have to wait as long, though, because the production of the current-generation XFC batteries is scheduled for this year.

The Polestar 5 is scheduled to reach the market in 2025, but the company warns that the first examples to ship won’t have this specific battery type installed – it will take a while to complete all the tests and obtain all the certificates.
