Video of Subaru WRX’s record-setting Goodwood run goes online at last

Subaru has finally released the video of its WRX Project Midnight racecar lapping up the Goodwood track in record-low 46.07 seconds. It also supplied some interesting details about the sedan itself.

Working with a stock 2.0-liter turbo engine, the engineers managed to boost it to 679 PS (670 hp / 500 kW). It ended up with dry-sump lubrication, an upsized Garrett turbocharger, sodium-cooled valves and a dual timing chain. The entire intake and exhaust systems have been rebuilt, too, and a special system was implemented to minimize throttle response.

The company threw in a bespoke exhaust system made from stainless steel and took care to route the pipes through the hood, rather than the rear end. A six-speed sequential transmission by SADEV was entrusted with delivering the momentum via a three-disc carbon clutch.

Alcon supplied the brakes, with Subaru adding a custom hydraulic handbrake to the stock setup. As for the suspension, the company claims it had come up with a flexible setup adjustable on a per-track basis to ensure the maximum grip for the 18-inch coated Yokohama Advan A005 slicks.

Thanks to the extensive use of carbon fiber in bodywork and polycarbonate windows, the Project Midnight weighs as little as 1,120 kg (2,469 lbs). It also has a cabin stripped bare of all creature comforts, with little to be seen there besides Recaro Spa Pro Racer bucket seats, six-point safety harnesses and a roll cage.
