Nio and CATL agree on a common swappable battery standard

Nio was one of China’s first automakers to begin developing a network of battery swap stations for EVs. Its expansion has been stalling lately because other automakers weren’t eager to make their cars compatible, but things are about to change.

The car company has signed an agreement with leading traction battery vendor CATL on a new quick-swap battery standard called Choco-SEB. It will be predominantly used in EVs from now on, allowing owners to swap out their used batteries for new ones without having to wait for a full charge.

Nio’s first EV to take advantage of the Choco-SEB battery design will be a hatchback called Firefly.
