Volvo V90 bows out of production

The Volvo factory in Torslanda, Sweden has churned out its final V90 estate. The company emphasized that the model was phased out as planned and not “sunsetted” in response to the changing market. It refused to name a replacement or even confirm that one was coming anytime soon, though.

The V90 joined the lineup nine years ago. It essentially stayed within one generation, only getting a mild facelift in the early 2020s. Having said that, some market observers call it a successor of the Volvo 960 from the ‘90s, or even its “second generation”. Whichever sounds more accurate to you, it didn’t have many different trims or specs. There was Volvo’s traditional Cross Country version, but it went out of production a while ago.

It’s refreshing, in its own way, to hear Volvo formally deny axing the V90 in favor of the better-selling SUV lineup, but that still seems to be the most reasonable explanation. After all, the XC60 was announced the Swedish automaker’s best-selling vehicle of all time back in June.

The smaller V60 model remains in production for the time being, but there were unofficial insider reports in August that it, too, was on its way out. Volvo will most likely wait until the planned end of production and then quietly remove the V60 without announcing a successor, the reports said.

The world’s last V90 to be made won’t be available for purchase. It has already been sent to the company’s auto museum in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The V90’s closest cousin – the sedan-shaped S90 – received a mid-life refresh this spring, so its future seems secured for the next couple of years.
