Rare Mercedes-Benz S-Class AMG heading to auction in late April

With many miles under the hood but a good overall condition, this 2002 Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG (W220) may fetch between $100,000 and $160,000 when it crosses the auction block at the end of the month.

The seller claims that AMG had only produced this particular model for a single month, so there aren’t many like it around. The sedan was always produced with an extended wheelbase and the company’s most powerful engine to date, a 6.3-liter naturally aspirated V12. It pumped out 450 PS (444 hp / 331 kW) and 620 Nm (457 lb-ft) of torque to the rear wheels through a five-speed automatic transmission.

Apparently, only 70 units were made in total, with all sales handled by the AMG department itself. Later on, Mercedes phased out this model with the introduction of the iconic S55 AMG and S 600 AMG. The former had a V8 and the latter a V12, but both were turbocharged – a downgrade from the turbine-free W220 seen here.

This particular example was imported into Japan despite having a steering wheel on the left-hand side. Its buyer optioned it with active suspension, ventilated memory seats and folding tables for the rear bench. With 136,200 km (nearly 85,000 miles) under its belt, it’s by no means new, but said to be in pretty good condition.
