Volkswagen is celebrating 75 years of presence on the South African market this year. To mark the occasion, the automaker’s Motorsport division keeps churning out one prototype racer after another. We’ve already watched a few of these climb the Simola track back in June (see video), and here comes another one – the most ridiculously powerful of all.
It’s a VW Golf R that ditched its 2.0-liter turbo mill in favor of an Audi-sourced 2.5-liter five-pot. Racing-grade forged internals and a high-end turbo setup drive the output of the engine to 1,000 PS (985 hp / 735 kW) and beyond, the company claims.
We were unable to find any in-depth info on the tuning, but Volkswagen assures us that the engineers behind the project were able to implement their wildest dreams – largely because staying street-legal wasn’t a requirement this time around.
The result is a track-only Golf R wearing crazy-looking bodywork along with a bold front bumper, a rally-style diffuser and a humongous rear wing. High-end AP Racing brakes and a tweaked AWD system are hopefully enough to keep the driver in control of the thousand horses under the hood.
South African racing driver Jonathan Mogotsi will be piloting this unhinged car in a number of hill climb races to come.
