A recent prototype of the forthcoming compact Land Rover Defender has been observed undergoing testing, notably featuring a rear-mounted spare wheel. This design element aligns the new model with the aesthetic heritage of both the current Defender and its classic predecessors, distinguishing it from numerous premium crossovers that often omit external spares for weight and emissions considerations.
This compact SUV, unofficially referred to as the “Defender Sport,” shares its Electric Modular Architecture (EMA) platform with the upcoming electric Range Rover GT. While the GT adopts a low-slung, fastback profile, the smaller Defender maintains an upright stance, squared-off rear, and robust proportions, prioritizing practicality and the established Defender design language.
The EMA platform was initially engineered for electric powertrains, incorporating an 800-volt electrical system to facilitate rapid charging. Earlier prototypes exhibited characteristics consistent with electric vehicles, such as closed grilles and the absence of exhaust systems. However, Jaguar Land Rover has adapted the EMA architecture to also accommodate hybrid powertrains, acknowledging evolving market demands and the sustained popularity of hybrid vehicles.
Upon its anticipated launch, potentially in 2027, the compact Defender is expected to enter a competitive segment. It will contend with the forthcoming smaller Mercedes-Benz G-Class, offering consumers compact interpretations of iconic off-road vehicles. Additionally, a revived Chery Freelander, though not affiliated with Land Rover despite its name and design cues, will present another option in this emerging market.
