BMW finds a way to mass-produce cars with E-ink wraps

The German company is positive that it can manufacture vehicles that their owners would be able to color and recolor as often as they like thanks to a wrap acting as an electronic ink display.

The proof of concept has already been demonstrated on a number of concept cars and show exhibits. To achieve the effect, BMW applies several layers of extremely thin wrap on every body panel, dividing it into individually controlled segments. Sending an electronic signal to these segments can define the way they look. The technology is sophisticated enough to create whole custom ornaments on cars and change them within minutes.

BMW reckons that it will need around three years to start offering this option to all customers.
