U.S. tuning shop goes through a Dieselgate of its own, pays $10M+ in fines

Rudy’s Performance Parts, an aftermarket company based in North Carolina, has been accused of large-scale emissions fraud.

In 2014–2019, representatives of the company sold and installed the so-called emissions defeat devices. Working together with unauthorized ECU software fixes, these devices typically let owners circumvent all exhaust checks built into their cars and raise performance at the expense of increased air pollution.

The prosecution has established that the company sold around 250,000 emissions cheat devices and made around $33,000,000 in profit from them. A $10,000,000 fine has been issued so far, but more action can be taken later if new evidence emerges.
