Retro-tastic Harvester Scout restomod fetches $33.8k

While Volkswagen is slowly bringing back the Scout badge in the United States, tuners are restoring and selling original SUVs and trucks from the 1970s. One such SUV has just changed hands at Bring-a-Trailer for a cool $33,800.

The production of the International Harvester Scout II started in 1961 and ended in 1980, making this MY1979 example one of the last to roll off the assembly line. The restorer left the stock 5.65-liter (345ci) V8 in place, but equipped it with a modern carburetor and an aluminum radiator. A three-speed AT with a dual-range transfer case was tasked with delivering the momentum to all four wheels. It’s a permanent 4WD system we are talking about here, by the way.

The exterior as repainted in Mint Green and brushed up with all chrome parts restored to their original shine. 15-inch steelies slotted into the arches alongside 31-inch Nankang Conquerer A/T tires. Disc brakes were installed at the front end, while the rear end held onto its drum brakes.

A look inside reveals vinyl-wrapped seats and a modern AC that managed to go out of order by the time this Harvester went up on sale. The listing specifies the mileage as 31,000 miles (51,500 kilometers), but is arguably the only weak point of the car. Scouts like this one used to come equipped with five-digit mileage counters that wrapped around to zero after reaching 99,999 miles. Here’s hoping the buyer made sure to inspect the car before forking over 34 grand for it.
