52-year-old Scout off-roader sells for $72.5k

A nicely restored International Harvester Scout went on sale a couple of weeks ago and fetched a solid sum of U.S. $33,800. Reporting on that one, we called it a decent price, but another example cropped up last Saturday and went for $72,500. That’s not too shabby at all for a used Scout vehicle!

As befits any classic car that’s a half of a century old, this model year 1972 off-roader received a complete overhaul at Anything Scout in Iowa. It was stripped down to bare chassis, sprayed with an anti-corrosion powder coating and carefully rebuilt with new hardware wherever necessary. It also ended up with a nice-looking set of aftermarket wheels shod in BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A K02 tires.

The powertrain underwent a major transformation as well. A new 6.0-liter naturally aspirated Vortec V8 slotted into the engine bay to drive the wheels with roughly 406 PS (400 hp / 300 kW) via a six-speed manual transmission and a transfer case. Dana 44 axles were installed at both ends for a more modern ride feel.

At the moment of sale, the SUV had over 130,000 km (80,000 miles) on the chassis and around 33,700 km (21,000 miles) on the new engine post-restoration. It didn’t deter the buyer, though, so we hope they get their fair mileage from this robust classic.
