Range Rover EV sheds camo as it tackles desert terrain

Land Rover has posted some photos of its upcoming all-electric Range Rover model without any disguising wrap on. The pre-production car is currently battling the scorching heat and the abrasive desert sands of the Emirates.

As you can see, the Range Rover EV isn’t much different from its gas-powered cousin. It shares the platform with it and is said to be able to cross water bodies up to 850 mm (33.2 inches) deep. The company also points out 800V electric internals, but stays silent about the motor count and power output. We should learn more next year when the SUV debuts.

As for right now, Land Rover says the Range Rover is going through its most intense tests ever. Among other things, the engineering crew is checking the performance of its HVAC system and the efficiency of battery cooling, which is supposed to keep it from overheating even when the outdoor temperatures reach +50 degrees Celsius (+122 ºF).

The sand dunes also provide a great opportunity for studying and tweaking the performance of the off-roader’s traction control system. The Range Rover team claims that the new Electric version runs much better on fine sand than its gas-powered predecessors – by a whole number of criteria, no less. In particular, it only takes a single millisecond for the torque vectoring systems to react to sudden traction changes – down from the usual 100 milliseconds.
