Lancia Gamma lives again as a high-riding hatchback for Europe

Italian automaker Lancia has unveiled a new SUV/hatchback called the Lancia, same as the executive car from the late 1970s and early ‘80s. There’s no relation, though: the new model runs on the STLA Medium platform and shares little with its historical namesake aside from, well, the name.

It’s 4,670 mm (183.9 inches) long and closely related to the DS N°7 crossover. The two models have roughly the same exterior shape and interior layout with only minor trim differences between the two. Design-wise, the Lancia surely stands out thanks to its original styling decisions partly borrowed from the recently unveiled Ypsilon Turbo 100 hatchback (see video).

Customers have four powertrains to choose from. The entry-level hybrid one combines a 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine with an e-motor for a total of 145 PS (143 hp / 107 kW). It runs 1,000 km (621 miles) on a full tank and battery. The transmission is six-speed dual-clutch without further options.

As for the EVs, the cheapest variant delivers 230 PS (227 hp / 169 kW) to one axle and has 540 km (335 miles) of range. Paying a premium unlocks 245 PS (242 hp / 180 kW) and 740 kilometers (460 miles). The top spec gains a second motor, sending 375 PS (370 hp / 276 kW) to the wheels while having enough charge for 675 km (419 miles) of range in Europe.

All production will be handled by the Stellantis factory in Melfi, Italy. That’s where the DS N°7 is being made, too.
