Drag Race: Fisker Ocean vs. Tesla Model Y Performance

Carwow has posted a new quarter-mile video featuring two sworn rivals in the electric vehicle world: a Fisker Ocean went up against a Tesla Model Y Performance. The EVs are similar in terms of both specs and prices, but they apparently perform very differently in straight-line acceleration.

Starting with the Fisker, it is a two-motor flagship spec driving all four wheels with 565 PS (557 hp / 416 kW) and 740 Nm (546 lb-ft) of torque. The Tesla is slightly less powerful, sending 527 PS (520 hp / 388 kW) and 660 Nm (487 lb-ft) of torque to both axles. However, while the Ocean weighs 2,343 kilos (5,165 lbs), the latest Model Y is much lighter at 1,997 kg (4,402 lbs).

Before proceeding with the race, the team makes multiple jokes about the Fisker Ocean having a built-in “launch counter”. Apparently, the car does indeed track its launch control statistics and caps the number of launches at 500 per drivetrain lifetime.

For its first attempt, the Fisker approached the start line with the most extreme drive preset selected, but it raced in the so-called “California Mode”. The California Mode drops all windows including the tailgate glass and opens the sunroof at a push of a single button.

Whether due to this mode messing with the aerodynamics or some other reason, the Fisker ended up obliterated in the first drag race attempt. Host Matt Watson learned his lesson and raised all windows for the second try. He managed to shorten the gap, but not to win, and blamed it on lethargic throttle response. In the third and final attempt, he finally nailed the start and was off to a good run – but the Tesla won the race yet again.

In the end, the Model Y showed the best quarter-mile time of 12.4 seconds and the Ocean couldn’t do better than 12.8 seconds.
