De Tomaso P72 gets ready to rumble, costs €1.6M

Revived Italian car marque De Tomaso has posted photos of its P72 racecar shortly before beginning the production. Based on the same-name Goodwood concept from the summer of 2019 (see video), it is coming to us in a batch of 72 units priced at €1,600,000 – a significant hike from the already bold original estimate of €750,000.

The De Tomaso P72 is a homage of sorts to the 1970 P70 racecar that Alexandro de Tomaso designed together with the legendary Carroll Shelby. The original plan had envisioned the P72 being built on the carbon-fiber monocoque frame of the Apollo Intensa Emozione supercar. Hong Kong-based investment fund Ideal Team Ventures purchased De Tomaso and Apollo brands in mid-2010s to gain control over both brands’ IPs.

However, the company ultimately decided to use a different chassis for the P72, a more modern design fabricated by HWA in Germany. HWA has close ties with Mercedes-AMG and specializes in building racers.

Despite the move to a different platform, the car appears visually unchanged aside from small details. To honor the historic tradition, it utilizes a 5.0-liter Ford engine. Modern tuning allows the mill to pump out an estimated 700 PS (690 hp / 515 kW) and 868 Nm (640 lb-ft) of torque.

The vehicle seen here is still a pre-production example running its final tests, but once those are over, deliveries will start shortly.
