BMW i3 Electric Sedan Differs From 3-Series Sibling

BMW's latest i3 electric sedan shares minimal components with its internal combustion 3-series counterpart. Unlike the i4, which shares its platform with the 430i and involved compromises such as limited battery size and air springs to manage weight, the i3 was developed with an electric powertrain in mind.

The Munich-built i3 50 xDrive sedan differs from the Dingolfing-made M350 and 330 models in most aspects, sharing only the front grille, mirror housings, and possibly door handles. This distinction is reflected in a 1.5-inch longer wheelbase, increased height, and width. The cabin is positioned further forward, and the windshield has a steeper rake, as the design did not need to accommodate an inline-six engine.

The i3 50 xDrive features a 322-horsepower, 321-pound-foot current-excited synchronous rear motor, similar to the i4. Its front motor is a 165-hp, 188-lb-ft induction motor, which is more efficient due to reduced drag when disengaged. The total output is 463 horsepower and 476 pound-feet, with an estimated 0-60 mph time of 4.2 seconds.

The i3's battery has a capacity of 112 kWh, compared to the i4's 84 kWh. The estimated range is 450 miles, though the EPA has not yet rated it. The 800-volt architecture supports charging at up to 400 kilowatts. A NACS port is standard, with an adapter for SAE Combo charging included.
