Mercedes-Benz GLC400 4Matic Electric Features Large Grille

The Mercedes-Benz GLC400 4Matic Electric features a prominent grille, despite its electric powertrain. This design element reportedly references the 1959 Mercedes-Benz W111, including available LED detailing that illuminates in a startup sequence. The vehicle's overall design is described as sleek, with three-pointed daytime running lights and power bulges on the hood. The roofline tapers, creating a teardrop shape.

The GLC400 Electric is built on a new platform, resulting in increased dimensions compared to gas-powered GLC SUVs. It is 5.0 inches longer, with a wheelbase stretched by 3.9 inches to 117.0 inches, and an additional 0.9 inch in width. Despite being only 0.1 inch taller, it offers more head and legroom for passengers. A standard glass panoramic roof is also included.

The vehicle is equipped with a 94 kWh usable energy battery, composed of flat lithium-ion nickel-manganese-cobalt cells arranged in four modules. The battery's electronics are located in a separate compartment for maintenance access. It utilizes an 800-volt system, which may contribute to faster charging and reduced cabling weight. Mercedes-Benz states the battery can charge at up to 330 kilowatts, achieving a 10 to 80 percent charge in 22 minutes. Test results indicated a peak charge of 350 kW and a 10 to 90 percent charge in 28 minutes, with an average rate of 188 kilowatts. The vehicle's stated electricity consumption is 119 MPGe, with a reported range of 350 miles.

Power is provided by two permanent-magnet electric motors, delivering a combined output of 483 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. This allows for a 0-60 mph acceleration in 3.7 seconds. The rear motor, producing 402 horsepower and 369 pound-feet, is the primary driver and is paired with a two-speed gearbox, which may improve efficiency at higher speeds up to its 132 mph top speed. A single-speed front motor, with a maximum output of 215 horsepower and 221 pound-feet, engages during acceleration or in Sport mode.
