Mercedes has spent at least three years developing a small off-roader with the looks and character of the iconic G-Class. Originally penned as an EV, CarBuzz now claims that it’s been reconceptualized.
In a recent interview with the publication, Mercedes-AMG lhead Michael Schwabe admitted that dealerships in the United States “insisted” on a fuel-powered version of the off-roader. Asked what kind of engine they settled on, Schwabe declined further comment, saying simply that it was “powerful enough.”
With the much-anticipated “baby G-Class” still under wraps, the media speculate that it might as well go all-electric for Europe while going hybrid-first for the USA. This market differentiation will make sense, considering the state of the EV industry. We also hear that the latest Mercedes-Benz CLA might provide the powertrain for North America. This sounds reasonable, too.
There’s still no premiere date for the smallest G-Wagen in history, not even an estimated one, so better keep your patience up.
