Reports: Tesla getting its robotaxi ready for Texas

Since unveiling its self-driving Cybercab this October, Tesla Inc. has been in talks about letting the car out on the roads in test mode. Reports are now coming in that the first EVs will hit the streets of Austin, TX.

According to Bloomberg quoting leaked internal documents, the negotiations are still in their early stages. It remains unclear when and where Tesla may finally get the approval for its autonomous taxi fleet, and how many vehicles will be admitted at a time. There are many details left to iron out, especially in the safety department.

When it unveiled the Cybercab, Tesla reps said the company considered California along with Texas for its destination. The automaker has a Gigafactory in Texas in addition to its international HQ, so it would make sense to start in that state.

In earlier news, we learned that the first Cybercabs will be assisted by remote human operators in challenging situations. Tesla reckons that it will ensure the necessary safety throughout the test period. Once ready for release, the cars will supposedly rely on their video cameras and AI-powered software to get their bearings.
