Volkswagen confirms repurposing its SSP platform for hybrids

The German automotive giant had originally planned to use its Scalable Systems Platform exclusively for all-electric cars, but the market has voted otherwise.

Following a steep decline of EV sales, the company has now officially confirmed that it was repurposing the SSP architecture for plug-in hybrids. The first vehicles based on it are slated for production in China in 2026. Europe most likely won’t get them until 2027 or later.

The SSP architecture was announced four years ago, but has yet to make it into a production car. Volkswagen Group admitted that it had a troubled development cycle, mainly due to faulty software developed by one of the group’s subsidiaries, CARIAD SE.

The ninth-generation Volkswagen Golf is scheduled to be one of the first SSP-based production cars to reach the market.
