Reports: BMW M’s smallest car to get AWD in mid-2026

The current BMW M2 coupe only drives the rear wheels, but this may change in mid-2026, claims CarBuzz. An all-wheel-drive version of the M2 is reportedly already running tests.

The insiders claim that adding the drive to the rear wheels improves the dynamic performance of the M2. In particular, while the RWD coupe sprints 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in four seconds flat, the new version should be able to do it in 3.5 seconds or so. That’s comparable with the M4 xDrive, which packs 510 PS (503 hp / 375 kW).

One of the biggest downsides of this design decision is added weight. With an xDrive system on board, the M2 may reach two metric tons (4,405 lbs). To keep it agile, BMW may want to boost the engine from its current 480 PS (473 hp / 353 kW) and 600 Nm (441 lb-ft) of torque. If it does, there will be even less difference remaining between it and the M4.

Last but not least, the sources claim that the standard manual transmission will have to go. Eight-speed automatic will allegedly be the only transmission available for the AWD M2.

When to expect this new model? The launch has been penciled in for the next summer, the sources say. This implies a premiere sometime in the spring of 2026.
