2020 Ford GT wins nearly $2M at an auction

A track-only Ford GT produced last year just went under the hammer for U.S. $1.87 million, surpassing the auction house’s highest expectations of $1.5 million.

The production cap was set to 45 units, and this specific example was specified with a unique livery. It went on sale with under 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) on the clock and no track day use on record.

The GT cost $1.2 million when new, so its owner could have originally invested into it with the view of reselling it later. Unlike road-legal GTs that are subject to a time-out resale ban, the racecar series is exempt from such limitations.

Interestingly enough, the track weapon has been developed with no specific racing regulations in mind. The iconic first-gen supercar won a Le Mans race once, and the latest generation is widely considered Ford’s best track car in history. Compared to its ancestor, the 2020 GT boasts an upgraded engine and a special aerodynamic kit that lends it extra downforce, while unfortunately also making it incompatible with most racing regulations.

Powering the new GT is a 3.5-liter V6 rated at 700 hp (522 kW), mated to a Getrag eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. 19-inch wheels come wrapped in racing slicks. Five-way adjustable shocks keep the clearance as low as 56 mm (2.1”), and acceptable lateral overloads are as high as 2G.
