GAC Hyptec SSR gets ready for serious off-roading

GAC China has introduced an interesting off-roader concept dubbed the Hyptec SSR Baja. It’s essentially a different take on its road-focused electric supercar called the Hyptec SSR a.k.a. Aion Hyper SSR. It wears a livery inspired by the LA street art and may never reach production, but the company seems genuinely interested in the “super off-roader” niche of the market.

Designed by the GAC design department, the Hyptec SSR Baja basically represents the Chinese automaker’s idea of a supercar capable of running Baja races in Central America without breaking down. Its design contains multiple nods to the U.S. and Mexican pop culture, from the color choices to the cloth upholstery in the ascetic cabin.

Compared to the street-bound Hyptec SSR, the Baja boasts lifted and reinforced suspension, ostensibly off-road tires, a rugged body kit, auxiliary lighting and a roof-mounted spare wheel rack. It also rocks an impressively large rear spoiler. The interior features a racing-style center console, a squared steering wheel, bucket seats and a robust-looking roll cage. And if you have any doubts remaining about the Baja spirit of the build, a small sombrero-wearing cactus mascot on the dash should convince you otherwise.

Nothing has been revealed about the powertrain. The road-going variant uses multiple e-motors to deliver up to 1,224 PS (1,208 hp / 900 kW) to the wheels.
